Allegation of Affair Rocks Edwards Campaign
Take it with a grain of salt, the allegations are coming from the National Enquirer. This, of course, isn’t the most reliable of sources. There are a few things, such as emails, that could prove one way or another on this, and the accusations are very serious. I’ll be skeptical, unless more proof comes down the road, but here is the accusations and reactions.
“The affair started about 18 months ago,” a friend says the woman confessed to her. “When they met at a bar, sparks flew immediately.
“She never expected it would turn sexual since John is married and is running for President. But it soon did — and she fell for him.”
In one bombshell e-mail message provided to The NATIONAL ENQUIRER, the woman confesses to a friend she’s “in love with John,” but it’s “difficult because he is married and has kids.”
In another e-mail, she writes: “Last night and this a.m., he actually has amazed me. He is a great man. My heart is loud and my head is silenced.”
Disclosed her friend: “She initially confided in a few of her closest pals that she was sleeping with ‘a married man named John.’
“It became clear the married man was John Edwards. They got together whenever they could, mostly at hotels where Edwards and his campaign staff stayed.”
The woman later spelled it out in a phone call to her pal and talked openly about having an affair with Edwards.
The friend says the woman told her that she “had a crush on John. One thing led to another, and they soon ended up in bed together. But she knew there was no way he was going to leave Elizabeth, a wife battling cancer.”
The ex-Senator’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. This past March, the couple announced her cancer had returned, but said his campaign would continue.
His spokesman said that allegations Edwards had an affair are “false, absolute nonsense.”
The woman’s friend told The NATIONAL ENQUIRER: “As the affair went on, she said that both she and John began to feel real guilty and they decided to end it.”
Now where there’s smoke there’s not necessarily fire, but anyone even remotely familiar with Edwards has to have wondered at some point about his pairing with wife Elizabeth. A looks mismatch like that usually involves a family fortune on the wife’s side… Throw in cancer and kids and you’ve got a made for tabloid story just waiting to explode.
If Edwards sinks or disappears, does it benefit Hillary? You’d think no–she doesn’t want a clarified head-to-head race against Obama. But Obama is counting on Edwards to do the dirty work of taking Hillary on. … The ideal outcome for Obama would be if Edwards loses most of his support yet stays in the race long enough to go on the attack. But even a complete Edwards disappearance would still benefit Obama, I’d think. (It’s a zero-sum game–somebody has to benefit.) …
However, if this were to turn out to be a massive Gary Hart style blow-up and damaged Edwards so badly that he had to drop out of the race, it would likely be great news for Barack Obama.
Obama and Edwards are very similar candidates and they seem to be splitting most of the anti-Hillary vote. So, if the Silky Pony were to be humiliated into leaving the race, you’d have to think that the lion’s share of his supporters would move over to Obama. That could eliminate most of Hillary’s breathing room and make this a genuine two candidate race.
PS: Don’t get your hopes up about this story panning out, yet. There was a story about an affair Kerry was supposedly engaged in back in 2004 that started to pick up steam and fell apart. That one looked even tighter than this one at first, but after initially adding fuel to the fire, the intern’s parents denied the story, she denied the story, and it just died on the vine.
Also several are pointing to background info at Huffington Post that may tie into this.
Red State wonders who is behind this…Obama or Hillary? Edwards isn’t much of threat, but more so towards Obama than Hillary. However, Hillary is the one with the history of manipulating the media. However, she could have picked something better than the Enquirer.

I think it’s all George Bush’s fault.
“So, is Laura Bush still staying in hotels because of George Bush’s affair with Condi Rice?”
Sincerely,
National Enquirer reader
One more thing. I’m sick of misleading titles.
“Rocks the Edwards campaign.”
What kind of stupid title is that? It definitely does not reflect the reality of the situation.
It projects the wishes of that particular blogger.
One better believe accusations like this ‘rock’ the campaign. Whether true or false, believe that the campaign staff are scrambling to respond carefully and sweating while doing so. If the general public become more skeptical of Edwards than the Enquirer report, it affects things negatively regardless if they are true or not. Right now we are all skeptical of the Enquirer. Still, it isn’t something that should be ignored, but researched. If the skepticism shifts because of more information then Edwards will really sweat. I definitely don’t want to find out that the allegations are true. That would be awful, especially with what his wife is going through. However, if it is true, we want to know the truth, as ugly as it may be. In terms of the election outcome, this could be good for Obama or Hillary…depends on how you look at it. On that regard, I couldn’t care less what happens here.
Jay,
Should we also investigate whether or not Hillary Clinton is a lesbian, as many tabloids have suggested?
Don’t you think she is? C’mon!
I don’t like Edwards and I think he’s an ambulance chasing, snake oil salesman. But I don’t want this to be true. I don’t think infidelity of anyones marriage is good news. Best case scenario, this story is just BS and the ambulance chasing trial lawyer is a faithful, happily married left-wing democrat. Faithful, happily married, democrat…Hum…Is that an oxymoron?
Media should not publish rumors like this! Media should never publish anything without a very reliable source.
I believe Edwards is the best presidential candidate because he talks about the problems with poverty and poor working class in this country. He is sincere, and I refuse to listen to any rumors which probably were started by a right wing crazy republican who just can not face honest discussions about bad realities in this country. Edwards wife is aso just a fantastic woman. I would love to see her in the White House, as a policymaker!
Unless Edwards sues, I will assume this is true. The Enquirer is obviously a rag, but they have an unblemished record with this type of story. They were the first with Lewinsky, Hart, Paula Jones, etc. Why would they commit liable against a high profile tort attorney?
