Louisiana: Another ACLU attack on a Christian display

Community resisting the attack:

“Standing in the shadow of the Slidell City Court, a swarm of protesters congregated Tuesday night for a rousing and at times revival-like demonstration, denouncing the American Civil Liberties Union and offering a show of unconditional support for the controversial portrait of Jesus that hangs on the wall just inside the courthouse.

Crowe seized on the opportunity to berate the ACLU, which has decried the portrait as a violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, saying it serves to advance a religious message using a public building.

The picture, which shows Jesus holding an open book of scripture, was identified by a local priest as a 16th century Russian Orthodox icon. The scripture, written in Russian, includes a biblical quotation about judging correctly and wisely. Beneath the portrait, a sign reads: “To know peace, obey these laws.”

Attorneys with the ACLU believe that the display gives the impression that only those who believe in the law of Jesus Christ will receive justice in city court.

But protesters claimed that the portrait, which has been on display since the building opened in 1997, has never posed a problem and fairly represents the majority of residents in their largely Christian community.

Originally, the ACLU gave court officials one week to remove the display, threatening to sue if they did not comply by today. The conflict has since cooled, after attorneys with the ACLU agreed to a two-week extension before filing suit, allowing the court to seek further counsel from a team of independent legal experts.

The ACLU has also sponsored six federal lawsuits in 13 years against the Tangipahoa School Board, all involving the promotion of religion in schools.

Among other things, the board has been sued for allowing the distribution of Gideon bibles in the classroom and for sanctioning a teacher-led prayer at a recent high school graduation ceremony. Both actions were filed this spring in U.S. District Court in New Orleans and are awaiting trial.

You know, religious people get bent out of shape when gays try to lobby for their rights or what they feel are their rights… I’m not going to get into that, but the argument is usually along the lines that they don’t believe gays can be considered a minority that deserves equal protection because it’s a choice.

Some would argue that it’s not a choice, but you know what DEFINITELY is a choice? Being religious. I don’t care where you grew up or what your parents told you, as soon as you’re an adult you can choose to believe or disbelieve whatever you like! So it’s pretty irritating when people of any religious denomination cry discrimination, as though they are some sort of ethnic minority whose rights are being trampled when they’re not allowed to do whatever they want wherever they want. A religion is simply a group of people with a certain set of ideas, and OF COURSE it’s OK to pick apart someone’s ideas in this country, whether it’s the idea that global warming is a man-made phenomenon, or the idea that prayer should be a compulsory part of a public school student’s day.

If you want your ideas to be considered SACRED, there are places you can go where the government isn’t allowed to impose taxation called churches, and your ideas are sacred there. Take them into the public arena and they will be exposed to the harsh light of day. If you can’t take that then keep it to yourself.

This place sounds as backwards backwoods as they come. May the ACLU completely destroy all that they hold dear.

          ACLU Über Alles.
The ACLU is no better than a bunch of NAZIs.
God isn’t Tinker Belle. He doesn’t need all the little boys and girls to wish real hard to keep him from disappearing. And he isn’t subject to majority rules. God makes the rules and he doesn’t care if 51% of Americans aren’t happy with his judgement. Homosexuality is against the rules. Abortion is against the rules. Not loving God and his son Jesus, is against the rules. And you will one day bow before him whether you believe in him or not.
You better get a reality check. It doesn’t matter if the ACLU wins this one or not. El Shaddai will win in the end.
I’d rather be a backwards, backwoods hick than an ultra sophisticate, effete intellectual on the wide path to destruction.
    Jesus loves you.
