Being 81 years old probably also has quite a lot to do with it since the only words back then for homosexuals was queer and that word. Not to mention the fact that he was using it against a fictional character that was written with him in mind by the writer until the writer changed it to more so being how he himself (the writer) might have been attracted to Tim McVeigh.
