ACLU Loses Bong Hits For Jesus at SCOTUS

In other Supreme Court news…the ACLU and Bong Hits For Jesus lose.

Now this is another sound ruling. In this case free speech is restricted, however, rightly so. In the environment of a school certain restrictions are necessary for good discipline and a productive learning environment. The school has every right to restrict student expression of drug advocacy.

The Supreme Court tightened limits on student speech Monday, ruling against a high school student and his 14-foot-long “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” banner.
Schools may prohibit student expression that can be interpreted as advocating drug use, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court in a 5-4 ruling.

Law Hawk is of a different opinion and finds the ruling disturbing. Is the Supreme Court sending mixed messages?

The school should have argued that it was an illegal endorsement of religion and that it violated the separation of church and state. Maybe they could have got the ACLU on their side as well. The ACLU vs the ACLU at the Supreme Court, a win-win situation.

Weren’t conservative legal organizations also on the side of the ACLU and the student in this case? Why single out only the ACLU? Why no analysis?

It is argued that censorship in schools is OK because kids are impressionable and should not be exposed to bad influences. But one of the worst influences that we can expose them to is the idea that censorship is OK.
