What Does A Guy Have To Do To Get His Own Cease & Desist Letter From the DNC? (Update on the Sebelius/Dean allegations)

Posted on May 11, 2007

Good Lord are those Democrats touchy!

Yesterday afternoon, I posted about allegations that Howard Dean had manipulated KS Governor Sebelius into criticizing the White House about federal response to the Greensburg tornado, as did others (a Technorati search should enlighten you as to how viral the story has become in the blogosphere).

The offended souls at the DNC have whittled down the reaction time to a very impressive overnight. Their lawyers sent a letter to both XM Satellite Radio (the ones who originally got the purported information) and to our buddies over at Free Republic. Both letters are not only denials of the facts as I mentioned them yesterday, but they also contain injuctions to cease and desist any further dissemination of allegations relating to this matter.

Did I just witness the 1st Amendment take a pick axe to the head?

This the first time that I have witnessed the attempted suppression of a political story without any underlying proof. Not even Gary Condit sank that low when he was neck deep in the Chandra Levy affair.

Even more bizarre: copies of both responses mentioned above were emailed to Michelle Malkin’s “Hot Air” blog (hat tip to them, by the way: I culled the above info from them), but they themselves did not receive their own legal mail.

Which makes me think: where is my cease and desist letter? Hey! Over here! No? Ok… Moving on….

What interesting reading the blogosphere provides…. Reading such as this post from blogger Sergeant Rock:

Two and a half days after the tornado mercilessly ripped through town, the Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius shows up; it took her long enough. And what did she do with her opportunity to explain to the nation on national TV what her constituents in Greensburg are facing and perhaps who their fellow Americans might help, she seized that opportunity to blame George Bush for the alleged lack of National Guard equipment available for the clean up effort. That’s right, she seized the opportunity to tow the far left wing Democrat party line. Blame Bush for everything and link it to the war in Iraq. No matter how stupid you sound, no matter if it’s true or not. Senators Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback both made it to Greensburg before the leader of the state did, even though Pat Roberts had to travel from Capital Hill, and Sam Brownback was on the campaign trail, they made it there before she did. I guess it was tough for her to find anything out of Topeka over a weekend.

Chris Stigall, a local radio talk show host on 710 AM KCMO, has been rightly hammering Sebelius for her shameless behavior. And he got somewhat a scoop on the story. You see, Kathleen Sebelius was ordered (say anonymous sources) by none other than the biggest mouth in the Democratic party, Howard Dean NOT to request any assistance from FEMA. Later someone named “Dick” and I assume that to be Dick Durbin, told her that they should link the tragedy to the Iraq War.

Here’s the info contained on Chris Stigall’s radio show blog (scroll down until you hit “the KCMO Morning Show Blog” , as mentioned above by the good Sarge, in the form of a Pentagon news release (focus on the bold lines):

National Guard Responds to Kansas Tornado
By Sgt. Sara Wood, USA
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 7, 2007 – More than 300 members of the Kansas National Guard have been activated in response to a powerful tornado that almost destroyed the town of Greensburg, Kan., May 4.

Guard members are assisting in search-and-rescue efforts in the wake of the tornado, which was classified as an F-5, the highest rating given by the National Weather Service.

The tornado wiped out much of the small town, knocking out power, water, natural gas and communications. To date, 10 deaths and more than 100 injuries have been reported.

The Kansas National Guard’s 278th Sustainment Brigade has established a joint task force near the incident site. In addition to search-and-rescue efforts, the troops are working on power generation, logistical support, debris clearing, support to law enforcement, supporting establishment of shelters and distribution of food and water.

Currently, the Kansas National Guard has 88 percent of its forces available, 60 percent of its Army Guard dual-use equipment on hand, and more than 85 percent of its Air Guard equipment on hand, said Randal Noller, public affairs officer for the National Guard Bureau. Under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is a national partnership agreement that allows state-to-state assistance during governor or federally declared emergencies, Kansas has more than 400,000 Guardsmen available to it, he pointed out. However, Kansas has not yet requested assistance from other states.

The National Guard Bureau has offered liaison, operational, communications, contracting, search-and-rescue, public affairs and community relations support, and is prepared to support the governor in any way possible, Noller said.

The National Guard also has been activated in response to other severe weather in the Midwest. In South Dakota, 27 Guardsmen were activated in response to severe storms that moved through the region yesterday, destroying high voltage transmission lines and power poles and leaving several thousand customers without electricity. The Guard troops are transporting water pumps and generators and providing sandbags to prevent flooding.

In response to heavy rainfall last night and today, the Iowa National Guard deployed 47 troops in support of local authorities to assist in sandbagging operations in the city of Red Oak, Iowa. Iowa National Guard troops worked with civilian first responders moving sand, filling sand bags and building temporary dams to mitigate the effects of the rising water.

Let’s match this with the statements made by KS Governor Kathleen Sebelius in the wake of the tornado (this links to an MP3 clip also featured on the 710 AM KCMO website), and what you get are Sargeant Rock’s very logical conclusions: something smells like political poo slingin’ here!

Looks like Sebelius has a lot of essplainin’ to do, even without the Dean manipulation allegations (yes, they are only allegations, unproven allegations! Get those snarling lawyers back in their kennels already!)

    UPDATE:

I have received a comment from Coffee260, the Free Republic poster who is the subject of one of the above mentioned letters. I think it is definitive enough in its affirmation of the facts to pull it out of the dark recesses of the comment gallery and give it the exposure it belongs:

RagingAnura–I posted the original post over at freerepublic, Howard Dean told Kansas Gov. Sebelius to Lie. I’ve since had correspondence with Jim Quinn of the Quinn & Rose show. He’s standing by the whole thing and had this to say about his source:

“i just got off the phone with my source. solid.”

And this about the C&D order by the KGB…oops…I mean the DNC:

“FUNNY. THEY HAVEN’T CONTACTED US”

So the stories specificity is so detailed that I think intimidation is their only defense.

What, the Democrats trying to take our 1st Amendment Rights?
No, they are just trying to define what the Definition of Freedom is?
