Illegal alien denied marriage license (no duh)…SURPRISE!…ACLU sues

Oh yeah, and the ACLU is dedicated to upholding the laws of our precious Republic, right? Sure.

Times-Tribune (PA): Woman denied marriage license sues county official

A West Hazleton woman has filed a federal lawsuit against a Luzerne County official who denied her a marriage license Monday because her fiancé is an illegal immigrant, according to a press release.

The American Civil Liberties Union is representing Heather Buck, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen, who says the county’s Register of Wills, Dottie Stankovic, denied her a license to marry Jose Arias-Maravilla, the father of her infant son and an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Stankovic has said her office refuses to issue marriage license to non-citizens if they do not show a current visa or green card because state law requires her to positively identify all applicants. The office can not verify a person’s identity if his or her immigration documents are expired or non-existent, she has said in the past.

Stankovic’s policy is based on an interpretation of the state marriage law, which does not explicitly say illegal immigrants cannot obtain marriage licenses. As a result, counties throughout the area and the state have different rules. Lackawanna County has a similar policy, while Pike County has no policy, officials in those counties have said.

What could make more sense than requiring someone to be a legal citizen or resident of this country before issuing a marriage license? Maybe, just maybe, the reason that there is not a specific prohibition in other jurisdictions is because no one could imagine that any illegals would have the unmitigated gall to demand such things while existing as parasites in a country they simultaneously spit upon and suckle.

This is just another chapter in the ACLU’s long history of undermining the laws, and indeed the sovereignty, of this nation.

The ACLU’s absolutely ridiculous argument is encapsulated here:

“Preventing someone from getting married because of immigration status is unlawful and a violation of basic human rights,” said Omar Jadwat, a staff attorney with the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project.

I don’t have shovel or even a back hoe big enough to move that steaming pile of manure. If you have the stomach, here is their release. What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand, ACLU???

When God looks down on Earth I’m sure he does not bother to note where man’s borders between the countries are. He knows that these borders are completely human creations and that he cares about the souls of each humans the same, no matter what side of the border they are on.

Of course, in the earthly affairs of man there are practical realities that seem to make human laws and borders necessary. However surely it is clear that to follow the dictates of Christian charity we should all do the best we can to minimize the impact of those human laws and borders on the lives of every human being on the planet.

I don’t claim to know the motivations of the ACLU in this matter, but on the surface of things they simply seem to be extending Christian charity to as many people as possible. You would think that Republicans/conservatives that claim morality and Christianity as their domain, would be cheering them on in this matter. Instead they seem to continually express contempt and hate for anyone they see as the slightest bit different than themselves.

I don’t believe for a moment that you are simply outraged by what you see as a breach of law. The political right in this country screams about legality when they think the law supports their values and when it doesn’t then they scream about the immorality or whatever else they can think up. The bottom line is that you have had the incredible good luck to be a citizen of a wealthy country and you want to share as little as possible with the rest of the world. Stop being so greedy and have a little compassion.

The gospels say to “love your neighbor as yourself,” “turn the other cheek,” “give him your cloak also,” and “love your enemies.” So bearing in mind these commands from Jesus, tell me who do you hate the most, the ACLU, God’s children in other countries, or me?

Is it okay if I pray for you to overcome the hate in your soul?

Pat is right. We shouldn’t stop the flow of illegal aliens across our borders.

In fact, Pat should head over to Israel and demand they tear down their security fence so the suicide bombers don’t have such a hard time getting into Israel and killing Jews.

When God looks down on Earth I’m sure he does not bother to note where man’s borders between the countries are.

    Genesis 47:21
21As for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other.

    Exodus 34:24
24″For I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no man shall covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God.

    Jeremiah 15:13
    13Your wealth and your treasures
I will give for booty without cost,
    Even for all your sins
    And within all your borders.

    Numbers 21:13
13From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

This clearly shows you are wrong, as is your post in its entirety.

Steve, pointing out that you don’t like the consequences of acting like a true Christian is something for you to take up with God. I didn’t issue those commandments and tell mankind how he ought to behave, your argument is not with me. If you don’t want to be a Christian then don’t be.

“I don’t claim to know the motivations of the ACLU in this matter”

    YET

“I don’t believe for a moment that you are simply outraged by what you see as a breach of law.”

    Hmmmmmmm…a little inconsistency here PP?

I know it has become popular for Leftists who don’t give a rip about Scripture to quote selectively from the Book Christians actually take seriously. I won;t even dignify your insincere appeal to the Bible with a lengthy reply. I will say only that either you forget or you do not know that God, through His Word has clearly placed a premium on obeying the law. Your viewpoint, as stated here, is a fabrication based on nothing.

Regarding the “different than themselves” pap, you need to read and comprehend before you open your yap. I wrote:

“What could make more sense than requiring someone to be a legal citizen or resident of this country before issuing a marriage license? ”

All I ask for is that the LAW be followed and that only legal inhabitants of the country be treated as such. I don’t care what color skin someone happens to have or what national/ethnic origin, ONLY that the laws of this country are followed. The ACLU despises this country and is doing all it can to wreak havoc on its citizens and this is another example.

“Christian charity” does not require that one or one’s government reward lawbreakers just because they demand a reward.

You attacked my respect for the scripture just because you thought (correctly) that I was a liberal. That is prejudging me, it is bigoted attitude toward liberals and most significantly, it is wrong.
Yes, I am politically and philosophically on the left. I’m probably further to the left than most members of the ACLU. But why should that make you think that I don’t take the wisdom of the bible seriously? I promise you I study the bible and take its wisdom far more seriously than you do.

So Glib, I see no reason to change my belief that you and your supporters in this thread are full of hate and bigotry. Prove me wrong, I would love to have you on the side that is working to extend Christian charity to all of God’s people. Maybe you have a very charitable side, but it doesn’t show in this thread.

“…ONLY that the laws of this country are followed.”
George Bush, his administration and his appointees have broken nearly every law this country has (don’t nit-pick this sentence, you know what I mean). Perhaps you can give me the links to the places where you have spoken out against all of that. Or do they not exist? If you are truly concerned about the letter of the law, then support the law, always, not just when it matches your own biases. I have no proof that you don’t do that, but…

“…God, through His Word has clearly placed a premium on obeying the law.”
I’m not even sure that is true of the OT and it certainly isn’t true of the NT. Jesus was frequently criticized for breaking the letter of the law while he was doing some greater good. Please don’t use the bible to justify hate and bigotry. Surely Jesus would not want us to be common criminals or commit crimes that victimize people, but don’t ask me to believe that Jesus does not want that couple to get married and live in the US, without telling me a lot more than you have so far. And don’t tell me what the message of the bible is, until you start caring about it as much as I do.

In my first post here I mentioned the commands of Jesus, that he gives in the last half of Matthew chapter 5. Namely: “love your neighbor as yourself,” “turn the other cheek,” “give him your cloak also,” and “love your enemies.” This is my favorite part of Matthew, because while in general Jesus’ life as portrayed in the gospels shows him to be a liberal, in the commands he gives here, it is absolutely undeniable. No conservative that I know gives these commands of Jesus anything more than lip service. Only liberals (and not many of them) even come close to following these commands.

The beginning of your post where you pointed out my inconsistency, was absolutely correct. I was aware of it when I wrote it, but frankly didn’t think you or the other two that commented here would notice. I took a shortcut and you caught it.
The justification for the shortcut is this: Characterizing an organization consisting of many people which may be pursuing multiple goals using strategies that have not occurred to me has a good chance of being at least partly in error. In contrast, taking one person’s comments that are targeted at a specific issue gives a much better chance of understanding their attitudes and motives. No doubt you are careful about race and culture, these days anyone with a brain is guarding against that sort of bigotry, but judging from your attitude here you have other areas to work on yet.

I’m not writing here just to annoy you or point out your errors for no reason. If nothing I have written so far has made you realize that you are not expressing true Christian values, then continuing this is pointless. If you have no interest in reaching out to those of us on the left that only want a peaceful world, then I am going to look for other places to try and make a difference.
There are a lot of militant atheist websites that I think need to tone down their attitudes. They correctly point out that Christians in the USA and around the world are mostly hypocrites, but they are wrong in thinking that just bashing Christians will make a difference. Maybe I would have better luck working with them.
I think they need to reach out to reach out to the Christians that truly practice what they preach, just like I think you need to reach out to liberals like myself that see real value in the message of the gospels.

But if you have nothing but hate, and an unwillingness to share the wealth of this nation with the poorer nations in the world then I’ll be moving on to greener pastures. Those of us that truly want peace on Earth will not begrudge your right to enjoy it, when we achieve it, even if you fought against our efforts. But your enjoyment of it would probably be sweeter if you helped work to achieve it.

Hey Pat I’m so happy for people like you in this country that see the true side of things. I am an illegal who came to this country as a child. I did not choose to come here illegally. For 12 years I lived a horrible life because life was harder for me because of my status. Now I am 18 years old and I want to get married so that my boyfriend (whom I truly love) can adjust my status. I promise that I’m not using him to adjust my status but we are getting married because he is someone I truly love. Unfortunately we went to apply for a marriage lisence and even though I gave them my birth certificate they wouldn’t let us apply because I needed a translated version and a drivers license which i clearly don’t have. I literally went home and cried because i couldn’t beleieve how hard it is for me to do a simple thing like getting married. I feel humiliated and degraded. Trust me that if i had been given the chance in this country i would work as hard as possible to achieve the american dream. I made A’s in high school and if i was legal i could have gotten into a good college. But my point is to show you just how hard it is for me on a daily bassis. Anyway it still makes me happy to hear that there are people like you out there.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!
