It seems that when a politician does wrong, people come to his or her defense by claiming that some other politician got away with it in the past, so the current wrongful act should be overlooked. Pelosi did the wrong thing and should have consequences. The Logan act is an important law. If a person, particularly one in a position of power like Pelosi, makes a deal she may cause serious harm if a foreign power wants to hold us to this deal. She is attempting to neuter the presidency and render the president a figurehead. She wants to assume power over the presidency now.

At face value, yes, Newt Gingrich is in violation of the Logan Act. I read through the Taiwan Relations Act and it does have a section dealing with aid for the defense of Taiwan. Gingrich's statements were not directly a contridiction of the Act, but rather an interpretation that the President did not agree with. Clinton had the right, due to this act, to choose to send troops (or not send troops) and equipment to help defend Taiwan. Gingrich's violation of the Logan act can be summed up to saying the US Will defend Taiwan instead of could or might defend Taiwan.

The Syria Accountability Act specificly states that the US will "(D) Reduce United States diplomatic contacts with Syria (other than those contacts required to protect United States interests or carry out the purposes of this Act)." So when the White House says "Don't go to Syria." Pelosi would be in direct violation of the Logan Act. That being said, and not including her putting words in Israel's mouth about peace talks (which is not covered by Logan), I haven't seen any other possible violation, since I haven't seen any reports of her doing much more than a handshaking tour during her trip. Pelosi's violation of the Logan Act could be summed up as going to play with the kids we put in "time out" because of bad behaviour.

Punishments? I strongly sugguest a slap to the hand and a firm "Don't let me catch you doing this again." for both of them. Which is what Gingrich got from the White house, and what Pelosi is currently getting now.

Nancy Pelosi has demonstrated, with just one visit, how vastly
more effective she is in foreign policy than the entire inept Bush
administration. I think you people are ticked off because she
proved with just one trip--one conversation--how much mor effective
she is than they are. It's not treason to subvert war or expasion

If Mrs. Pelosi said anything contrary to the administration's position, it wouldn't be a first. Just remember that House Speaker Newt Gingrich did in China in 1997. Too bad none of you conservatives were interested in enforcing the Logan Act back then.
