There is no such thing as privacy rights beyond any aspect of property rights. If you give a bank or any other institution your intellectual property they are free do with it whatever they please unless you have some contract with them. It is the same with your money or any other possession. Currently banks can distribute information about you though you are given an opt out option.

The Security letters are warrantless searches which make them unconstitutional at the federal level. The only way they may be deemed constitutional is if the situation meets the criteria that a warrantless search is normally allowed or if the conditions in the clause in Article 1 Section 9 that allows the privilege of habeas corpus from being withdrawn and the last is a liberal interpretation of that clause.

Terrorism requires money. So the federal government is conducting investigations into financial records that may be linked to terrorist activities. If the federal government did not do so, it would be remiss in taking steps to protect us from further terrorist strikes. The New York Times and the ACLU are simply off the wall.

From what little I've heard about this report, it doesn't concern me anywhere near as much as the other programs. We kissed away our right to financial privacy back during the "war on drugs."
I'm glad the ACLU is raising a stink about it, but I doubt they'll get anywhere.

Notice the way they paint up investigating terror suspects’ finances into ’spying’ on innocent ‘Americans’? They do the same thing with the NSA program. They use the typical scare method on the paranoid exaggeration that the ‘government is flipping through American’s checkbooks.

"Terror suspects", like any other suspects in this country, are innocent until a court of competent jurisdiction says otherwise. So frankly, I don't see how you can say that they are doing anything other than "flipping through checkbooks" of innocent people.

As I said in my blog, if they want to monitor my online game subscriptions, my purchases at Newegg.com and my occasional night at the bar... go for it... and them monitoring those activities for anomalies that would indicate terroristic intent does in no way violate my privacy... thats like saying that the cashier at the grocery store violates my privacy because she sees what I buy.
