No Flag Freedom

The usual attack on Southern pride in their history:

“A civil rights group is challenging an Eastern Kentucky high school’s use of the Confederate emblem as its school flag, saying the symbol is hurtful to black students at other schools.

The Ku Klux Klan were prominent Democrats in the first half of the 20th century — which is a lot more recent than the North/South war. Maybe all representations of the Democrats should be banned too! If the Confederate flag is historically associated with racism, so are the Democrats. Modern-day Democrats don’t support the Klan but nor do the students above support slavery

It is a symbol and therefore it is up to those putting it up to say what it represents and not for the Civil Rights group. I will concede this to the Civil Rights group and that is this would be a public contract of a sort and so unless those putting up the flag make their point clear then the general publics viewpoint would hold dominate. The general public includes more than Blacks or the Civil Rights group. The Civil Rights group needs to present reliable evidence that show the general public of that area believes the Confederate emblem supports racist views. The high school can head that off by making the reason why they believe otherwise public in such a manner that the emblem and the reason are viewed together.
