ACLU Says School Graduation In Church Viloates Constitution
Posted on December 19, 2006
More ridiculous, over zealous insanity from the ACLU: I like how clearly this editorial lays it out.
As ACLU attorneys correctly point out, the First Amendment prohibits Congress from passing laws “respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
Some theorists, including those at the ACLU, interpret the clause to mean that public schools are forbidden from taking any action that might be reasonably construed as endorsing a particular religion or the practice of religion generally.
But when you examine the facts, it’s hard to see how anyone could make a case that the Constitution has been violated.
First Cathedral leases the space to corporate and community groups all the time. No proselytizing takes place.
School districts chose the space because it is far less expensive and roomier than the religiously neutral facilities that the ACLU prefers. That includes school gymnasiums and athletic fields. Leasing the church can save tax dollars and allows students to invite more friends and family members to one of the most important events of their lives.
It also happens that the church is suitable for a graduation ceremony, providing large television screens to view graduates as they receive their diplomas, handicapped access, abundant parking and seating comfort.
Curiously, the ACLU did not issue a similar threat to the town of Windsor, which has held graduation ceremonies at the church for the past five years. Now, the civil liberties lawyers are barking up the wrong tree.
But, but….but what if an atheist attends and is forced to see a cross!!! They may be irrepairably injured by such a site! They could go blind or melt, or something!
No…seriously, the ACLU said it would only be ok if the ‘religious nature’ of the church was covered or removed.
“The messages of these cases is simple and clear: the only time public schools may even consider using religious facilities is if the religious nature of such facilities – both inside and outside the building – are removed or covered,” he says. “The religious facility must be religiously neutral to be permissible. A church is obviously not a religiously neutral facility.”

Wow! I guess my daughter’s school is in hot water now. They hold their annual “Christmas” concert in a *gasp* Baptist church.
