Survey: ACLU widely recognized, but one of the least trusted organizations in America

Posted on December 14, 2006

Shocking!

From Harris Interactive: American Red Cross, AARP, The Nature Conservancy and U.S. Chamber of Commerce are Among the Most Trusted Beltway Groups ; National Rifle Association, AFL-CIO, and ACLU are least trusted

The ACLU actually comes out as THE LEAST trusted organzations among those polled, pulling up the caboose with only a 49% “trust” rating. As this organization continues to be exposed, President Bush’s current approval rating will appear as the picture of PR success to the ACLU.

As much as the NRA is attacked from all corners of the media and the culture gate-keepers, it STILL outdistances the ACLU by 5 points. The Heritage Foundation deservedly comes in at a nice 68% clip, with Brookings looking even better at 73%. Can’t quite figure out why Cato is lagging, since the center-right and center-left peers of Cato just mentioned do so well.

Not surprisingly, there are a few partisan differences within the trust levels of these organizations. The largest difference is the 49 percentage points that separate the Republicans and Democrats over the ACLU — while 70 percent of Democrats trust them, only 21 percent of Republicans trust the ACLU.

The article doesn’t show anywhere near enough history to determine a trend, but the 2005 result of 49% seems to indicate that they are holding steady.

The 21% Republicans are probably some kind of libertarian and the 30% Democrats may be social conservatist.
