Chicago Mall Terrorist Plot Foiled By Feds
Via ABC:
ABC News has learned a Chicago-area man has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack.
Sources say the man is accused of planning to use firearms and explosives to attack a specific mall in Rockford, Ill. The alleged plan was to target this mall during the holiday shopping season.
As CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports from outside the courtroom of U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez, a source tells CBS 2 that a suspect was arrested in a case with national security implications.
Law enforcement officials say the man was a U.S. citizen, and planned to commit some sort of terrorist attack in Chicago. The man had “ideas and desires, but no means,” law enforcement sources said.
A source said earlier that the alleged plot might have involved a shopping mall, but later information did not specify what the target was.
Law enforcement officials added that the alleged plot was not on the level of 9/11, and even “three rungs below” the recent Miami plot that was disrupted. That plot involved alleged plans to blow up Chicago’s Sears Tower.
The man arrestred Friday is considered a lone operator without ties to any known terrorist organization, law enforcement sources said.
Hmmm…I wonder what ideology motived him. Stay tuned, I’m sure we will learn more.
Update: I guess we now know what kind of ideology…the “violent jihad” kind.
The man — described as a U.S. citizen named Derrick Shareef — faces charges for allegedly planning to set off hand grenades in garbage cans in malls during the holiday season.
The Smoking Gun has the affadavit: Here’s a bit from page 6…where he talks about Allah willing, infedels, and stabbing Jews.
Press Conference says he was a convert to Islam and was influenced by jihadist websites. What a surprise!

CNN reportst the fellow’s name.
Cool. I just hope they didn’t spend too much on this guy. By my count, “Three rungs below” the Sears Tower plot leaves you no more than a few inches off the ground. The war will bankrupt us if we spend too much rounding up every nutbag with plans he can’t execute.
“Shareef.” That’s Swedish, right?
He appears to be both a singleton and an amateur who had the intent but not the means. The FBI offered him the means and he gapped at the chance. The question if the jury will convict him. How many individuals like him are wandering around but have no idea how to get the means to do havoc.
