Bolton Resigns
Update: Drudge is reporting that Democrat, George Mitchell is on the short list.
First Rumsfeld is canned, then Mel “Amnesty†Martinez is nominated for RNC chair, and now allegedly he’s thinking of appointing a Democrat to the UN. He’s really embracing this bipartisan thing, huh?
Potential Machiavellian silver lining: maybe Bush has military plans for Iran and wants to trade on the international goodwill Mitchell earned from the Irish peace process when the attack eventually comes.
One of the first, after Rumsfeld, casualities of the “new direction the Democrats are taking us in.
The White House resubmitted Bolton’s nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. The incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, said he saw “no point in considering Mr. Bolton’s nomination again.”
While Bush could not give Bolton another recess appointment, the White House was believed to be exploring other ways of keeping him in the job, perhaps by giving him a title other than ambassador. But Bolton informed the White House he intended to leave when his current appointment expires, White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.
Bush planned to meet with Bolton and his wife later Monday in the Oval Office.
As late as last month, Bush, through his top aides, said he would not relent in his defense of Bolton, despite unwavering opposition from Democrats who view Bolton as too combative for international diplomacy.
This is a great loss for the U.S. I’m sure the appeasers and criminals at the U.N. are celebrating.
Hot Air has video.
Very depressing news this Monday morning. We are losing a staunch, devoted defender of America’s interests at the U.N.
Reacting to the news, Eleanor Clift chuckled on Fox News that Bush is just “recognizing reality.”
If the White House thinks throwing in the towel and throwing Bolton overboard will appease the Dems or the U.N., it doesn’t know what reality is.
Texas Rainmaker agrees about the Republicans throwing in the towel.
I want a refund. Since you guys are refusing to do any meaningful work, I think it’s time you declined to take your paychecks. And for that matter, perhaps you ought to refund the pay you’ve received over the past couple of years since you didn’t do jack then either. Give it back to us. Lord knows we’re going to need it when the Democrats come rolling into Washington with their hands out for pet social programs.
I don’t think this is a case of Bush appeasing to the Rats. It is depressing news, but it looks to me like Bolton saw the reality of not getting passed the Senate, avoided a bloody battle over it, and gracefully bowed out. However, I could be wrong, as I often am. He will go down in history as the best U.N. ambassador of our times in my book.
Sister Toldjah feels the same way.
think he’s one of the greatest UN ambassadors we’ve ever had. He will be missed, not by the people who think we should play nice with evil, but by the people who believe evil should be called for what it is.
It’s a shame that the use of extraordinary tactics by the minority in the Senate kept him from getting confirmed to begin with. With the new Congress coming in, Bolton wouldn’t win an up-or-down vote, obviating any previous rationale for bypassing the rules.
American Pundit has the important question about this news.
Who are we going to get instead? Some liberal? Perhaps someone who will just stand by and let whatever happens happen? I shudder to think.
I wonder which squish will be acceptable to the Dem majority. I hear Lincoln Chafee’s looking for a job. Ack.
Hey MKH, it could be worse, check out Wizbang:
So I wonder who the Democrats think that Bush ought to send to the United Nations? Who can be properly sycophantic and apologetic and simpering enough to pass Senate muster?
Well, now that Saddam’s trial is over, I hear Ramsey Clark has some free time…
Now that would be scary!
This, in a word, sucks. It’s not as if he were likely to be confirmed, but…dammit. Let’s just hope he’s replaced by someone equally tenacious in fighting for American interests at the cesspool of corruption and despotism that is the U.N.
Atlass Shrugged, one of Bolton’s biggest cheerleaders, says we’re screwed!
What is surprising is how quickly Bush rolled over………………. John Bolton was a loyal Bush stalwart. Clearly he was at odds with recent Bush policy decisions that were chock full of carrots but no sticks for savage bullies, but he never said a cross word. Never. Loyal. No wonder Bush is isolated.
A very bad day for America. The Bush Doctrine RIP.
Not the best way to start a week.
More… good news for Iran, Syria, Cubazuela, Sudan, Hezbollah, Libya, etc.
One of the bad precedents the Senate Democrats have set in these past few years is that of blocking appointments on a routine basis. They will come to regret making that tactic acceptable.
Elections have consequences. The Dems want an ambassador who will, presumably, work with the UN in pursuing a multi-lateral consensus on everything IE – a chump who will bend over and take every time the feckless UN says boo to America.
Poliblogger wonders what the big deal is.

QandO
So the question remains…who can replace him? Will it be an appeaser? No matter who it is, they’ve got really big shoes to fill.

I’m absolutely livid and disheartened by this. John Bolton is quite possibly the best UN ambassador we’ve ever had. He’s done an excellent job, and I really was hoping for an extraordinary act. Such as U.S. citizens directly funding his salary, to keep him on for a 2nd recess appointment.
Despicable that partisan politics have prevented him from even having an up or down vote.
