Charlie Rangel Says Bring Back The Draft
Posted on November 19, 2006
When I read this news my first thought was back to the last Presidential election when the Democrats stirred up a rumor that Bush planned on doing this. Sweetness and Light thought the same thing.
Say, where is the “Rock The Vote” crowd? Weren’t they and the rest of George Soros’ stooges spreading the lie that the Republicans intended to restore the draft if they won in 2004?
The “youth vote” turned out in record numbers on election day and apparently voted very heavily for the Democrats. (Remember, Rangel was going to retire if the Democrats didn’t win control of the House.)
The GOP called their bluff last time by bringing it up for vote where Rangel voted against it and it failed 402-2. I don’t think there is much of a threat to worry about on this.
Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 under a bill the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says he will introduce next year.
Rep. Charles Rangel (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars.
“There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm’s way,” Rangel said.
Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families.
Rangel said he will propose a measure early next year. While he said he is serious about the proposal, there is little evident support among the public or lawmakers for it.

Iowa Voice:
An all-volunteer military, despite what these crackpots believe, draws the best and the brightest to enlist. It’s the only “program” in the government that has actually been successful at doing what it was created to do, and that drives liberals nuts. It just drives them crazy to think that the one government agency/organization/program that is actually doing what it’s supposed to do, and succeeding, is the one that stands for everything they’ve ever hated in their lives.
Wake Up America has a name and a few choice words for Rangel.
Rangel’s goal, of course, is to create a military that (he thinks) no one would dare ever use, and he believes he’s got a compelling argument: “I don’t see how anyone can support the war, and not support the draft.”
From the standpoint of Rangel and the image of his party, this is shoot-yourself-in-the-foot politics. It (rightfully or wrongfully) smacks of precisely the kind of power-trip-run-amok that Republican doomsayers were saying would occur if the Democrats got into power and return to control key committees. Democrats: just watch your poll numbers if you shove this baby through Congress (it is unlikely to happen).
Rangel’s proposal will go where it has gone every other time he has proposed it: Nowhere.
It’s a fitting symbol of what Democrat rule in Congress will be the next two years: A worthless, cynical expenditure of time and energy that accomplishes absolutely nothing.
