Remembering 911

I was deployed to Kuwait when 9/11 happened. I reported to work and watched the first tower struck on the news. We were shocked, but confused on what happened. It really struck home and all doubts left when the second tower was hit. We knew that American had been attacked. The floods of emotion were uncontainable flashing from shock and horror to anger patriotism and of course after much effort to hold them back it was followed by tears. I’m sure that this simple description of my emotional reactions are echoed by many others.
I also remember how our country came together during this tragic time. The worst of times were also the best of America shining and united. The strength and spirit of America and our love of freedom filled all of our hearts and binded us together with one common cause and one common enemy that all could see for the evil it was. The sleeping Giant was once again awakened and Americans reflected on all of the things they had taken for granted. The American spirit of unity and strenght rose up in the depths of our hearts and transformed us into one. Everyday people became heroes and America weeped with one voice for the innocent that died that day. America was one.
It is hard to believe that it has already been five years since our wake up call. It is also hard to believe that so many have fallen back asleep. The war goes on, and America can not forget. The war is real and America must be vigilante. On this day I pray for unity in America, condolences to those that have fallen, and a salute to all the heroes and American troops fighting this war against evil and terror. I will always remember.
As you remember today keep in mind these timeless wise words of the great Ronald Reagan.
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”
