Iran To Continue On Nuclear Path

Posted on August 21, 2006

Of course it is no suprise to most people that Iran will continue to snub its nose to the U.N. and the world community over its nuclear ambitions.

Iran has said that it will not suspend its uranium enrichment programme in return for a nuclear package backed by six world powers, according to the Iranian foreign ministry.

Hamid Reza Asefi, a foreign ministry spokesman, said on Sunday: “We are not going to suspend [enrichment]. The issue was that everything should come out of negotiations, but suspension of uranium enrichment is not on our agenda.”

Iran said it would formally respond by Tuesday to proposals made by the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany.

Suggesting Iran will not give a clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’, Asefi said: “As the proposal has had several dimensions, our answer will be multi-dimensional too.”

Iran’s case has already been sent back to the UN security council because Tehran did not reply quickly enough and, last month, the council passed a resolution demanding Iran suspend enrichment by August 31 or face possible sanctions.

This kind of attitude is very predictable. After all, why would Iran pay any attention to the U.N.’s empty threats when they can buy all the time they need without any consequences? Anyone that still holds out hope that diplomacy will convince the mad leader of Iran to stop preparing for his long dreamed of destruction of Israel are hopelessly fooling themselves. A nuclear weapon is the very power they need to attempt this plan. Anyone who assumes anything less are truly naive.

So, as Iran blatently gives the middle finger to the U.N. and deny IAEA inspectors access to the underground nuclear facility in Natanz, the question is whether there will ever be any real consequences. Denying access to the inspectors is a direct violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Just watch that little detail get swept under the rug for the sake of more appeasement. We will continue to allow them to buy more and more time. How long will we let this go on? Are we prepared to intercede militarily if diplomacy continues to fail, or will we allow Iran to attain nuclear weapons? I think most can all conclude which of these options would be more dangerous; that of inaction and further appeasement. Iran sees the U.S. and the entire U.N. as paper tigers and see absolutely no threat or incentive to stop their nuclear developments. There is no doubt that without some major consequences imposed on them, Iran will continue down the dangerous path of nuclear development.
