You lied about the confession, Bluto. There was none. Nor was there a “Top Secret” program. The fact that the government was monitoring data through the SWIFT database was made public as early as 1998.

Espionage refers to the use of agents to obtain information about a government’s (or company’s) activities.

The NYT explained in their story that they obtained the information about the Top Secret government program to track terrorist finances from a confidential government source. In other words, they enticed a government employee to violate his or her secrecy oath, then printed the information for their own profit (you did know that The Gray Whore is a for-profit organization, didn’t you? I can usually take basic knowledge for granted with commenters, but you seem to be a real “special” case).

They made no secret of this (how could they) and acknowledged all of it in an editorial following the story.

If you are really that backward and need a particularly fine point put upon it: there is exactly as much evidence to believe that it was a hoax as there is to believe that a conservative sent the envelope, as Reuters speculated in their story.
