That is war crimes trials. I am not sure if the government wants to do that with the prisoners in Gitmo. From their action so fait it apears more like they are trying to debrief them and then give them back to their home countries when they have gotten what they want.

"We have never tried prisoners of war before. "

Uh, aren't there precedents for trying people in violation of the laws of war?

Constantine,

We have never tried prisoners of war before. You negotiate with their country of origin for their release. If you had been paying attention you would know that is done. Wake up you are falling for propaganda.

If the Bushites are so bloody convinced that everybody at Gitmo is a dangerous terrorist, if they have such solid evidence, why are they afraid to give them a fair trial? If convicted, they could keep them imprisoned as long as they wanted or execute them, right? Rather, they know that in their paranoia to round up everybody who was accused of terrorism, they imprisoned quite a few innocents. With the world's eyes on Gitmo, Bush would rather keep people locked up indefinitely than admit his administration screwed the pooch (again).

[...] Stop The ACLU Maybe they shouldn’t be so fast to celebrate. Not being able to detain these guys means that instead of them hiring ACLU lawyers they will probably just be killed on the battlefield. [...]

Stop The ACLU Blogburst
The website and blog seem to focus more on family oriented issues: teen sex education, religious issues, family matters, and the like. These are more of the topics I like to blog about and the people at Take Issue, Take Charge need to be challenged.

[...] The Supreme Court has ruled 5-3 that our current system of military tribunals and regulations, which is allowing us to hold hundreds upon hundreds of dangerous terrorists at Gitmo, is unConstitutional. The question is, what do we do now? Do we release dangerous terrorists back into the world, or do we spend years upon years trying every single one of them in a civilian court. Do we waste countless millions of dollars providing each of them a legal defense and trying them? Providing defense shouldn’t be a problem, as the ACLU seems more than willing to do so. Stop the ACLU brings us the best coverage: In a sharp rebuke to the Bush administration, the United States Supreme Court today ruled 5-3 that the military commissions system established by President Bush to try detainees at Guantánamo Bay is unfair and illegal. The American Civil Liberties Union, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, applauded the decision. [...]
