The Senate today voted overwhelmingly to reject a proposal to withdraw most US troops from Iraq by the end of the year by a vote of 93-6. The legislation that was voted on was taken from a proposal offered by Sen. John Kerry (D MA) and was introduced by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R KY), according to Liz Sidoti of My Way News.
“I am absolutely convinced the terrorists would see this as vindication,” said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R TN). This same debate took place over in the House as well today, however no vote was taken or proposed.
“We must stand firm in our commitment to fight terrorism and the evil it inflicts throughout the world. We must renew our resolve that the actions of evildoers will not dictate American policy,” remarked Speaker of the House Rep. Dennis Hastert (R IL).
The Wicked Witch of the West, I mean House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who aspires to become Speaker should the Dems regain control of the House said, “The administration continues to dig a hole. They refuse to come up and see the light.”
What light is that? The light of false hope? The false enlightenment of the doom and gloom camp of which she seems to be a permanent member? The light is the light of hope. Hope that Iraq will become a peaceful example of how democracy can flourish in the Arab world.
Rep. Charles Norwood (R GA) challenges us, “Is it al-Qaeda or is it America? Let the voters take note of this debate.”
I quite agree Congressman Norwood. The cut and run camp are endangering a repeat of the failures of Vietnam. A conflict in which whether we agree with the reasons for putting troops on the ground or not, they were there and deserved the opportunity to win.
The US forces in Vietnam won every major battle engagement of the conflict, but yet it became a quagmire. Why was it a quagmire? Because politicians in Washington created the quagmire by attempting to limit battle operations for political reasons.
When American military lives are in the balance, it should be the commanders on the ground who make the decisions as to when the operation has been completed, not liberal Senators who aspire to become President (and don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of achieving it).
Iraq isn’t a quagmire. It is a winnable military objective that is making gains each time the Iraqi Defense Forces take over an area of their own country. So it is time for these doom and gloomers like Kerry, Murtha, and Pelosi to shut their pie holes and give our guys what they need to achieve their goals.
