U.S. Sets Conditions for Talks With Iran
Update: As expected, Iran says no thanks.
Via Washington Post:
The United States is prepared to join other nations in holding direct talks with Iran on its nuclear program if Iran first agrees to stop disputed nuclear activities that the West fears could lead to a bomb, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday.
“To underscore our commitment to a diplomatic solution and to enhance prospects for success, as soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities, the United States will come to the table,” Rice said in remarks prepared for delivery at the State Department.
I don’t think this means much, since as Allah Pundit points out, they have absolutely no intentions to stop enrichment. I also share concerns on what will happen if Iran calls our bluff and suspends the program temporarily. Are we headed down the path of diplomacy here, or the path of appeasement? I think it is an attempt towards diplomacy, but don’t expect Bush to get any credit for such an attempt if it fails. After all, as Gore points out, Bush is a renegade rightwing extremist. What a complicated mess. Meanwhile, Iran is preparing for our invasion.
Rick Moran has a very interesting perspective on the whole thing too.
