US And Iraqi Forces Launch Largest Air Assault Since War Against Insurgents North Of Baghdad
The American military has reported that U.S. and Iraqi forces launched the largest air assault since the U.S.-led invasion against insurgents north of Baghdad.
The U.S. military has launched its biggest air assault in Iraq since the invasion in 2003.
Operation Swarmer involves more than 50 aircraft and1,500 Iraqi and U.S. troops as well as 200 tactical vehicles.
The target is suspected insurgents operating near the town of Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad.
A statement said the assault was launched on Thursday morning and is expected to last several days.

According to the Coalition Press Information Center, initial reports indicate that a number of enemy weapons caches have been captured, containing artillery shells, explosives, IED-making materials, and military uniforms.
Operation Swarmer began this morning with soldiers from the Iraqi Army’s 1st Brigade, 4th Division, the 101st Airborne Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team and the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade conducting a combined air and ground assault to isolate the objective area.
Attack and assault aircraft provided aerial weapons support for the operation and also delivered troops from the Iraq Army’s 4th Division, the Rakkasans from 1st and 3rd Battalions, 187th Infantry Regiment and the Hunters from 2nd Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment to multiple objectives. Forces from the 2nd Commando Brigade then completed a ground infiltration to secure numerous structures in the area.
Washington Post throws this little jab in.
But the crackdowns have failed to ease a raging guerrilla campaign that has killed thousands of U.S. soldiers, Iraqi security forces and civilians.
Good luck to our troops. We can already see who the MSM are rooting for. I’m sure the MSM will try to wrap this into their ever hopeful civil war talk. Hopefully we will catch or kill someone of importance in their chain. Don’t hold your breath for the big fish, I expect to hear the same old…”we missed him by a few hours.” But I do hope we do some major damage to these thugs.

Although this is developing, keep in mind that the Army Division that is reported to be involved in this “air assault” is the 101. In Army terms, an air assault is when you assault a position via helicopter. Where the troops are actually dropped in via repelling or air assault landings.
FoxNews is making this seem like an air bombing campaign. When if fact if it is involving an Army Division and that division is the 101, my money is on a ground assault initiated by helicopter.
They are calling it the largest air assault since the invasion because to be honest I don’t remember very much air assault operations during the invasion. I remember the 7th Cav storming through the desert and the Air Force bombing the hell out of them.
Now, I could be reading too much into it.
“Operation Swarmer” – practice for “Operation Iranian Nukes?”
Gribbit, that’s right. My hubby was with the same unit that’s doing this operation in Iraq; 3/187 Rakassans (HOOAH!), Air Assault, before he was with the 82nd ABN DIV/2nd BDE. Air Assault simply means the method of arrival is via a chopper. They can repel down a rope from a hovering chopper or exit a chopper that lands on the ground. It’s that simple. These guys are not paratroopers, nor do they drop bombs.
But they ROCK! Air Assault was Black Hawk Down.
The big story here is that 1/2 of the 1500 troops are Iraqis. They are truly looking squared away, and also the intel is getting good. It was accumulated by Iraqis and is being executed by Iraqis.
And, has anyone noticed how good looking this Iraqi Army is? Not like the Baathist Party of old with the beer bellies.
