House Renews Patriot Act, ACLU Disappointed
My first reaction to this breaking news was “HA!!”
Now it is “ha, HA, HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAA!!!!!”
As the House of Representatives approved a final set of amendments to the fundamentally flawed bill to reauthorize the expiring provisions of the Patriot Act, the American Civil Liberties Union expressed disappointment that the small package of amendments failed to protect the liberty and privacy of ordinary Americans. These amendments and the reauthorization bill passed the Senate last week without the changes needed to ensure these extraordinary powers are focused on suspected foreign terrorists and not innocent people. The House approved the flawed conference report last December.
The fact is that both Houses of the folks we elect to represent us have reviewed things, and see no reason for a probe. The majority, comprised of both political parties, in both the House and the Senate have passed the Patriot Act. These are the people we have elected to represent our best interests. The ACLU do not have our best interests at heart, only a partisan political agenda. No one elected the ACLU, and if they were subject to that, you can bet they would lose everytime.
The following can be attributed to Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office:
“Today’s vote failed the American people and the Constitution. Proponents of the law claim that the reauthorization achieves key ‘civil liberties protections,’ but the facts don’t match the rhetoric. The Patriot Act could have been reformed to protect our security and liberty by focusing the resources on suspected foreign terrorists but, at the Bush administration’s insistence, Congress chose to ignore common sense reforms in favor of cosmetic changes.
We also found this tid bit very entertaining.
Our elected representatives should listen to the millions of Americans who demand that we both safe and free, rather than pay heed to partisans in the administration opposed to modest reform.”
Yes, millions are crying for Congress to strip the Patriot Act of an effectiveness. We all know the ACLU won’t shut up till that happens.
One final question; If another terrorist attack happens on U.S. soil….no, make that when, WHEN another attack happens, that is more serious than a Mad Muslim Motorist sideswiping sidling students, do you think the ACLU will complain about the governments apparent lack of ability to stop that attack?
Or will they say that an attack is simply the price one pays for living in a “free society?”

Yeah, keep laughing. As the pointed out, the business record provisions of the so-called “Patriot” Act are basically gun registration in disguise. Will you still be laughing if and when the government comes for your guns?
Who said I even have a gun, Jason? Are you worried that they will come for your gun Jason?
The day they come for the guns, Jason, is the day the New American Revolution starts.
If you really think the ACLU are concerned with your guns, I’ve got a bridge for sale.
As the pointed out,…
Sorry, that should have been “As the Gun Owners of America pointed out…” I’ll learn how to use HTML tags one of these days.
Who said I even have a gun, Jason?
Sorry Kender, maybe I shouldn’t have made that assumption. It’s just that your picture in the sidebar shows you with a tri-corner hat, so I figured you also have a muzzle loader. (:
Are you worried that they will come for your gun Jason?
Whether or not I have a gun is none of the government’s business. At least we still have the private transaction loophole.
If you really think the ACLU are concerned with your guns, I’ve got a bridge for sale.
Yes, I know. That’s why I support the GOA in addition to the ACLU.
You should call the ACLU and ask them if they will defend your second amendment rights if need be, Jason.
I do, in fact, own a Queen Anne muzzle loading 50 cal. black powder pistol. But I also own a few other choice weapons.
Well naturally the ACLU is upset. They dont want us to give up a few civil liberties for a short time to be able to catch these terrorist [edited] that want to wipe us off the face of the earth!
And I think they (Congress) should have gone with more Library (Looking into) than what the ACLU wanted to demolish altogether (Since terrorists seem to go to alot of internet cafe’s and Library’s) and only got a simple bit accomplished. We are at war! If you are not doing anything wrong, what the hell do you have to be worried about? Is the ACLU worried that pot smugglers will get hauled off to jail? Since most of the ACLU seem to be high anyway, ley me reasure them, THEY ARE NOT MONITORING PHONE CALLS FROM PEOPLE IMPORTING POT!! They want to find out who the hell is associating with Al-Quaida, and I for one want to know also. Big loss for the ACLU, my civil liberties are not in jeopardy here. I have nothing to worry about
Oh did I mention Screw the ACLU????
“Yes, I know. That’s why I support the GOA in addition to the ACLU.”
Well, you are 1 for 2.
If you have anything, anything at all, quotes, articles, legal actions that would show the ACLU willing to go to bat for you on any 2nd Amendment issue, I’m sure that I would not be the only one interested in it.
Kender, Jay, and Loboink,
I probably should have said this more clearly the first time. You’re right that the ACLU doesn’t concern itself with gun rights. This doesn’t really bother me, as there are plenty of other interest groups that concern themselves almost exclusively with gun rights. but it also means that just supporting the ACLU isn’t enough for a civil libertarian like me, so I also support one of the organizations that is concerned with protecting gun rights.
“the ACLU doesn’t concern itself with gun rights.”
The ACLU, like the SCOTUS, are aware that they can antagonize any part of the “crocodile” they want to, but to mess with the teeth has painful consequences.
Most gun owners and 2nd amendment advocates can clearly see that were the ACLU able to find a way, they would pervert the 2nd amendment as ruthlessly and incessantly as they do the rest of the “Bill of rights.”
The ACLU, SCOTUS and every right-minded politician know that it is a volatile issue, with great ramifications, if you are on the wrong side.
For me to support the NRA, GOA or any other 2nd amendment group AND a group who would most definitely oppose “individual rights” concerning the 2nd amendment, is contradictory, double-minded and asinine, IMO.
