ACLU Opposes Minimum Sentences

Some simple laws are in place to prevent judges from acting like the Judge in Vermont, who originally gave a sex offender a 60 day sentence. Most of these laws have to do with drug use, and they establish a minimum sentence to offenders of the law, as opposed to the judge decided the sentence. The ACLU apparently thinks these laws, which help make sure judges aren’t racially, morally, or intellectually biased, are unjust.

WASHINGTON – As the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights heard from experts and a victim at a hearing today on the discriminatory impact of mandatory minimum sentences, the American Civil Liberties Union urged the body to reject that unjust practice. In conjunction with other civil rights and criminal justice organizations, the ACLU submitted written testimony and recommendations to the Commission.

“Mandatory minimum sentences create a system that undermines our notion of justice,” said Jesselyn McCurdy, an ACLU Legislative Counsel, who attended the hearing. “It is both unwise and unfair for judges not to have discretion to consider the facts of each case and hand down sentences accordingly. This unwise practice inevitably leads to a disproportionate impact on minority communities, an end result antithetical to the American way.”

This isn’t about equality, or justice, as the ACLU would like us to believe. This is about the ACLU’s not-so-well-hidden agenda supporting illegal drug use. If it was up to the ACLU, Police wouldn’t be able to arrest people who broke drug laws. In fact, they would repeal these laws in a second. The ACLU should end their charade, and they should just come out and say what they want. They support the legalization of illegal drugs. The ACLU is dangerous.

I love the “minority” argument. These ACLU guys will do and say anything to play to the crowd to gain support. It doesn’t work for the Dems anymore, and it won’t work for the ACLU. Also, what supposed civil liberties are being violated here?
