Kentucky Legislator Wants RU486 OTC
Posted on February 21, 2006
The morning after pill, otherwise known as RU 486, has received some critical press as of late. It seems that 4 deaths in California can be directly linked to the pill.
Now Kentucky state Representative Tom Burch has introduced a bill which would make the morning after pill available without a doctors prescription. This was a measure considered by the Food and Drug Administration prior to the first reported death and has subsequently been dropped. This drug has not been approved for over-the-counter sales by the FDA, but yet this state legislator is pushing a bill through.
Fox News medical contributor Doctor Manny Alvarez stated that the actual number of deaths due to the taking of this drug may be much higher. Many times the cause of death isn’t attributed to RU 486 even though it is the major contributing factor. Dr. Manny went on to explain that the manufacturer recommends that the woman take the pill orally but some are taking it in other ways, which also work but in some woman can cause major health problems. Dr. Manny believes that most of these cases of death are because of taking the drug incorrectly.
It seems to me, that whether you are pro-life or pro-death, the mere fact that the FDA has not approved this drug for over-the-counter sales should be enough to prevent this bill regardless of the outcome in the Legislature.
Rep. Burch introduced this bill because of an ACLU release of a survey which showed that 90% of pharmacies in Kentucky do not stock the drug at all. This is a case of the ACLU with the help of a Democratic State Legislator attempting to force their culture of death will on private businesses.
Pharmacists from coast to coast have been under fire for not dispensing RU 486 out of reasons of conscience. The ACLU and Planned Parenthood have been attempting to use state licensing regulations to force these Pharmacists to go against their religious teachings and dispense medications which are used to end human life.
This creates an observation. It seems to me that if we were in a war where conscripting troops would be an issue, the ACLU and other liberal groups would fight to defend an individuals right to be exempted from compulsory service as Conscientious Objectors. But yet, these same people who would talk themselves blue in open court to defend Conscientious Objectors, are advocating the removal of licenses and terminations of employment for Pharmacists who refuse to dispense RU 486 on the same grounds. Seems to be quite hypocritical to me.

RU486 is “the abortion pill” and is not the same thing as the “morning after pill,” Plan B. Plan B contains the same hormones as daily birth control pills. If taken within 72 hours of, erm, making that big mistake, Plan B can prevent ovulation or implantation. It’s Plan B that is being pushed for here, not RU486.
