ACLU Tells Town To Stop Plowing Lots
In an age when local governments are consistently cash strapped, a local government has been carrying on a long standing tradition of plowing snow from parking lots for the town’s houses of worship. A practice which has been going on for as long as anyone in the community of Bellingham, Massachusetts can remember; until now.
A town resident, Ernest Godbout called the American Civil Liberties Union who in turn sent their customary threat letter. Upon review by the town’s legal counsel, it was advised that the town should end the practice. source
Now, time for my opinion…
This town indiscriminately did a service no matter the cost to ALL the houses of worship in that town. These are places that are open to the public and accept all who enter. It is my opinion that the generous tradition of the town to clear the snow from the parking lots is a good one. I believe that the town was looking out for the safety of its residents.
The town didn’t cut this traditional service due to budgetary constraints and were content to continue the practice regardless of the denomination of the churches. I can see in no way how this can be construed as the Congress passing legislation “respecting the establishment of religion.”
I am confident, that if this town has a Mosque that they were plowing its parking lot as well. And if it doesn’t, I am equally sure, should one have been built, they would start to plow its lot along with all of the other houses of worship.
It is our contention here at Stop The ACLU that this is the type of strong-arm tactics which shows that the ACLU is a legal terrorist organization. The mere threat of litigation is enough to force small town America to capitulate to the secular wishes of the ACLU.

Yet another attempt to pander to one person. I suppose this person either doesn’t exist or is worried that he’ll be “tainted” with God in his life. He can just choose not to believe, no one’s forcing him to go to church.
Yet Christians put up with immorality every day in the media our kids are subjected to. The last time I remember, gay pride marches are on public property, and they use police officers on taxpayer money to block off streets and keep te peace, but we can’t have Church parking lots plowed?
Sheesh….
We should e-mail these townspeople and let them know they need to get some Ball$.

This is just stupid. If I ran that Church I’d encourage members to park on the street that this moron lives on. Of course then they’ll say that they can’t park on public streets while attending religious services because that would be starting a national church. What a load of crap.
You’ve got to give the ACLU some credit. It obviously isn’t converned about how potential supporters feel about it’s actions. I doubt any liberal reading this post thinks this move makes any sense whatsoever, or if it’s worth the time and money it will take.
One thing to consider is where most ACLJ lawyers come from. There are affiliates everywhere, in every city in America. Most offer pro-bono services, and many are friggin nuts. I know a few in Wichita. It’s possible that the national organization might not even be in control of much of the litigation. It’s hard to imagine they are when cases like this one come up.

As Damion all but explicitly said on his blog, “fairness,” as defined by people proudly awash in stupefying ignorance, is tantamount to “unquestioned special dispensation.” These boils on the *** of genuine conservatism are simultaneously aghast at the idea that crap-heaps of worship lose their ridiculous tax exemption and agog over the notion at denying its visitors even more community handouts.
Reasoning with people like this is futile. Their view of the world is that if it’s Christian (now equivalent to anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-gun and pro-death in general), it’s wholly and unquestionably American and vice-versa, and they propose that any interpretation of the Constitution that denies the nonexistent “Christian heritage” of America can only arise from “judicial activism.” It would all be funny if these dingbats didn’t have the option of wobbling cross-eyed off to the polls to cast their thoughtless votes.
Jeff I just want to thank you for contributing to the ongoing success of conservatism. I’ve said this a lot in the past: Perhaps someday, we stupid right-wingers can learn to think for ourselves and reach the same conclusions you do. I guess diversity only applies to skin color and sexual preference.
“Perhaps someday, we stupid right-wingers can learn to think for ourselves and reach the same conclusions you do.”
Diversity of opinion is good, but just as critical is the recognition that certain opinions are as stupid as the people advancing them.
You’re not inherently smart enough to think like me, but that’s not the important thing. It would be sufficient if you could avoid reaching conclusions like this one:
“If I ran that Church I’d encourage members to park on the street that this moron lives on.”
All this does is confirm that you’re an [edited]. You act like the church is legally entitled to a free act of goodwill on the part of the town.
Next time I hear of yet another child-molesting priest or whore-soliciting Baptist minister, I’m going take a dump on the nearest church lawn and throw rocks through the windows. How’s that for productive?
until reading this, i was confident of my convictions; however if jeff kilgore is right wing, i wish that i would have voted for john kerry.
