Democrats Call Closed Door Meeting in the Senate
Posted on November 1, 2005
Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, questioning intelligence that led to the Iraq war and deriding a lack of congressional inquiry.
“I demand on behalf of the America people that we understand why these investigations aren’t being conducted,” Democratic leader Harry Reid said.
Taken by surprise, Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.
“The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership,” said Majority Leader Bill Frist. “They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas,” the Republican leader said.
Reid demanded the Senate go into closed session. The public was ordered out of the chamber, the lights were dimmed, and the doors were closed. No vote is required in such circumstances.
Reid’s move shone a spotlight on the continuing controversy over intelligence that President Bush cited in the run-up to the war in Iraq. Despite prewar claims, no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and some Democrats have accused the administration of manipulating the information that was in their possession.Source

The only spotlight here is the one the democrats are desperately trying to get back into. Grasping at straws to regain some kind of footing after all the political power they have continously lost. This is nothing but a stunt, and a desperate one at that. The disappointment the democrats over the impact of indictment charges for “trying to lie about a crime that wasn’t even committed” have set them in a tail spin. Now that their spotlight has been stolen by the nomination of a Alito, and the right have reunited, the left are going to desperate measures, and political stunts.

I think Frist and Company should just sit back and let them pull these juvenile stunts. Hell, they should put it on national TV. It’s only going to hurt them. Who knows, maybe they’re doing this to throw a bone to their base (the Kos and DU loons) because they know they can’t stop Alito. Or maybe this strategy is designed to the delay the Alito hearings so Sandra Day can sit on cases the left will think will rule their way.
With this type of inane stunt, Senator Reid is frustrating the Senate’s effort to do the public’s business. The general public will see this clown for what he is: a clown.Right Pundit

How ridiculous.
It’s about time!
This is nothing but a Democratic Temper Tantrum. Let them look silly.
It’s about friggin’ time.
I love the cry-baby Republican knee-jerk reaction of calling it a “stunt.” Hey, when Republicans have been pulling stunts daily for decades, I’d say the rod’s in your eye.
Always count on the dems for entertainment. Too bad Dean wasn’t there to howl some side effects. Pitiful.
If Fitzgerald calls Colin Powell
to testify, Cheney, Bolton and a host of others go down.
It’s pretty clear that the operators and fans of this site are fairly serious Christians. Well, I am too, and my Christian education is unequivocal about certain things; among them, that lying to justify war is wrong. The Fitzgerald investigation has made it apparent that the Bush administration lied in their attempts to justify the invasion of Iraq. As Christians, we are being intellectually and morally dishonest if we don’t demand a full and frank explanation by the White House. If it takes forceful action by Congress to make that happen, then so be it.
Christian Americans need to wake up and realize that just because President Bush broadly insinuates that he’s against abortion, he’s not actually much of a Christian. If you’re honest with yourself, you must acknowledge that it is time for us to stop supporting George Bush and his party. Knee-jerk hostility to everything Democrats do isn’t political activism; it’s a sign of being a well-trained attack animal. Think, pray, and realize that the GOP hides behind Christ and his teachings in order to further their agenda of serving the rich.
I fail to see the advantage Reid gains. I must be slo…
Political stunt it may be, at least it finally is forcing some action to expose the real reasons behind our troops dying for oil. At last I am proud that I voted Democrat.
Ben,
Pardon me but what a bunch of rhetorical horse crap. All you’ve done is wrapped tired old talking points in a transparent “Christian” wrapping and tried to serve it to us as if it’s some kind of gourmet meal. I’d like to send mine back because horse crap with cream sauce is still horse crap underneath. Since you don’t seem to have a very good attention span or perhaps you just haven’t taken the time to really understand Operation Iraqi freedom, I’ll give you a brief explanation. That is intelligence was primarily gathered during the Clinton administration and public commentary on it from high ranking officials of almost every political persuasion were in accord. Saddam had WMD’s and needed to be stopped. Every major intelligence agency said so, and just about every politician worth a damn agreed. All before the evil George Bush took office. That is why Bill Clinton signed into law the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998.
“Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 – Declares that it should be the policy of the United States to seek to remove the Saddam Hussein regime from power in Iraq and to replace it with a democratic government. “
There were no WMD’s found in Iraq when we went in. But that was only one of several reasons given for going in. You could easily say, based on the law signed by Clinton, that we were in fact fulfilling our obligation under that act that Bill Clinton apparently didn’t have the balls to do. I suppose it’s far more Christian to allow the suffering of people under a murderous dictator who has been proven to provide support and funding to terrorists throughout the middle east. We’re in a war on terror Ben, not just a war on Al Queda. But I understand that the facts can be an inconvenience to you so I’ll get back on point.
Primarily, Saddam was in clear violation of over a dozen U.N. resolutions spanning 12 years, the last one warning of forceful entry is the reason we went to war. Once again, our President did what others refused and took care of business. If U.N. Resolutions are going to mean anything, they have to have to be carried out. We were lawful based on the U.N. resolutions and our own Iraqi Liberation Act. Trying to appeal to people’s Christian values this way is a low but I’ve seen it before and it’s just getting old.
I truly believe that it is entirely possible that the French and Russians helped Iraq move its weapons out of the country during the pussyfooting of the U.N. leading up to our invasion. They knew that if the U.S. went in and found french and Russian weapons there would be hell to pay back at U.N. headquarters. I’ll give you a guess of who the biggest suppliers of arms were to the Iraqis under Saddam. queue Jeopardy theme
Did you say France and Russia? And who were the most outspoken nations in opposition to invasion of Iraq? If you said France and Russia you’d be right! Jay tell em what he’s won!
Your emotional plea is crap and your points dull. Have a nice life.
Excuse me Ben, but as a student studying to be a minister, I feel my knowledge of basic Christian belief is also pretty extensive, and I agree with you that lying to justify a war is wrong. What is also wrong is false testimony without proper evidence. Because we haven’t found WMD”s (but we have found materials to make them) doesn’t mean they weren’t there. Deep down, (we are talking about Saddam Hussien) everyone and their mother know that he was a threat. He gassed millions of his own people, what do you think he’d do to us. If we actually listen to what Bush said we’d hear that the idea was to stop Saddam BEFORE he had the capabilities. And as a Christian, I find it appalling that other Christians would protest the liberation of fellow human beings who were being slaughtered all the time for so much as cutting a loud fart. The Democrats, instead of concentrating on issues, just attacks the Republicans any chance they can get. That is why they lose elections, and that is why we love them. Conservatives worry about Hillary? Her party is now run by ultra-liberal socialists. Visit their blogsites sometime. They hate her. She’ll never get the nomination. Conservatives will lose an election here and there, but until Dems take the war on terror seriously, and stop worrying about who is offended, they’ll never be trusted.
