Alito’s Mom Says: “Of Course He’s Against Abortion!”

Posted on October 31, 2005

For democrats, and liberal special interest groups like the ACLU, this nomination comes down to one issue…abortion. Many conservatives were looking for a fight, and with this nomination they have surely found one. No one will be able to blame President Bush if Alito does not make it through the confirmation process. The majority of democrats are going to question this man to death, in particular about abortion. Liberal special interest groups are already up and arms over a case in which he was the lone objector about notifying your spouse before going off to kill their baby. (See Confirm Them for text to Casey Vs. PP). The last time I checked it takes two people to make a baby.

One could pick this case apart if they wanted to, and thats exactly what the left are doing. They are crying about how some spouses abandon the woman, etc, etc. Maybe its just me, but if you were to use a blanket philosphy for rare cases like this, it seems to me you would ignore cases in which must also be considered. How about a case where the baby’s father left for legitimate reasons, and the mother just decided she didn’t want to have the baby? Would this father have no opportunity to take responsibility, or have a choice in taking custody and care of the child? Like I said, this case could be picked apart again and again. The man made a brave decision based on the merrit of the law.

Actually, Ol’ Glenn Reynolds said it very well: yeah, I followed a link from somewhere and saw it:

So where’s the husband’s procreational autonomy? Did he give it up by getting married? And, if he did, is it unthinkable that when they get married women might give some of their autonomy up, too?

The problem here is that you can say “my body, my choice” — but when you say, “my body, my choice but our responsibility,” well, it loses some of its punch.

All that being said on his judicial views, his personal views are not even in question.

Alito’s politically conservative views were not in dispute. “Of course he’s against abortion,” his 90-year-old mother Rose told reporters at her home in Hamilton, N.J.

By the way, if you haven’t seen the picture of his family yet, Wizbang has it. I definitely think they could have chosen a better backdrop.

Alito seems to be a good choice. In regards to his decision on spousal consultation (if that’s the right term for it), he dissented because in his view the requirement for the wifr to discuss the matter with her husband was constitutional-

“I do not believe that Section 3209 has been shown to impose an undue burden as that term is used in the relevant Supreme Court opinions; I therefore apply the second prong of the two-part test; and I conclude that Section 3209 is constitutional because it is “rationally related” to a “legitimate” state interest.”

He seems to be exactly the sort of Supreme Justice that America needs right now. If only he’d been there when the Kelo decision came before them.

Every time a woman shouts “, my body, my choice” she needs to be told loud and clear that it is not her body that she is “killing”, but the innocent body of a precious human being. And if someone’s body is to be protected it is and must be that of the most vunerable of us- the unborn!
There is no justice that does not give the father equal say in this decision to kill a part of his body also. The choice, if their be any, was made when they conceived the child!
