Many people I know have been asking, what did the ACLU do for the Katrina victims. My response has been, that as far as I know…nothing. Well, now they are…they have decided to help some people out. Who you ask? Well, of course our most opressed group of “victims” in America…the criminals.
A civil rights group filed court papers on Thursday demanding access to the New Orleans city jail to investigate allegations that the lockup became chaotic after Hurricane Katrina, with inmates abandoned for days, without food or drinking water, with floodwaters up to their chests.
It took three days to evacuate over 6,000 inmates from the lockup after the storm hit on Aug. 29, prison authorities have said. The prisoners are now being held at 38 state and local lockups around Louisiana.
The American Civil Liberties Union’s court filings demand information about where each prisoner is locked up. The group also wants the sheriff’s office to halt any clean up at the jail because it could destroy evidence that prisoners were left standing in bacteria- and petroleum-laden floodwater.
Hold on a second. They are telling them NOT to clean up the mess? The Sheriff admits that the storm knocked out electricity, and that many of the prison’s facilities and toilets were damaged, but denies the inmates were not fed. He says they were provided with food and MRE’s. Out of 650 on the security staff, only seven or eight abandoned their posts. I’m really trying to understand how it would be the prison’s fault that poluted waters flooded the cells.
But anyway, out of all the people who have been affected by the storm, went without food and lost their homes, I find it quite interesting which group the ACLU decided to help out.

….adding to the horrer of this story…remember, they make money on every “law” suit they win!
Well, the ACLU remains quite consistent, don’t they? Support criminals, take money every chance they get from honest people.
If the ACLU thinks they have a lawsuit on their hands, how about throwing it at Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Kathleen Blanco.
yeah I agree with you lawrence..
Read an article a few days ago about two guys that were on vacation in N.O. and were arrested for public intox or some other simple misdemeanor and before they could bail out, Katrina hit.
When the jail was evacuated, they were split up and one went to a nice jail with A/C and good food and the other went to Angola where the power was knocked out and the water started to flood the place.
He tried numerous times to explain the situation but they kept telling him that there was nothing they could do because all the records were lost and they would have to sort it out later. You would think the ACLU would be more interested in helping someone in this situation. He was on his 3rd week.
Thats the ACLU for ya!
Putting criminals before citizens, sounds just like the ACLU.
Jay,

Woo Hoo!
Way to go!

Prisoners are human beings too.
It’s sad that you folks here don’t think it’s important that they be protected.
Maybe someday you’ll feel differently, if something happens to you or a family member.
