Hurricane Katrina affected whole cities and disrupted lives for entire families. The country has poured its heart out in efforts to help the misfortunate people who’s lives were uprooted from them. Many lost there homes, and have no place to stay. Many have evacuated to other states, where open hearted families and governments are taking them in.
Among these misplaced souls, are the scum of the earth.
BOSTON (Reuters) - As many as 4,500 sex offenders are among tens of thousands of people evacuated by Hurricane Katrina, prison officials say, worsening what critics call an already patchy national database on sexual crimes.
Louisiana State Police say 3,300 to 4,500 sex offenders lived in areas swamped by Katrina. Of those, about 270 usually check in at parole offices in five districts shut by Katrina and are considered at higher risk of repeating their crimes.
From Texas to Massachusetts, authorities have struggled to identify sex offenders among evacuees — with varying success. And Hurricane Rita, steaming through the Gulf of Mexico toward the Texas coast and western Louisiana, makes that task harder by delaying the reopening of New Orleans.Source
Understandly this concerns many, including State governments who’s primary duty is to protect it’s own citizens.
Around the nation, state and local authorities are checking evacuees’ pasts as they are welcomed into homes, schools, houses of worship and housing projects. In some states, half the evacuees have rap sheets.Source
In South Carolina, state police checked every evacuee flown there by the government. Of 547 people checked, 301 had criminal records, according to Robert Stewart, state Law Enforcement Division Chief.
Not the kind of people you would want to open your homes to, especially if you have children. Many, who want to help the misfortunate want to know who they are opening their doors for. Criminal background checks sound like common sense to most folks.
Guess who has no common sense? That’s right, our old friend, the defender of civil liberties (especially for criminals, perverts, and terrorists), the ACLU!
Expressing “dismay and disappointment” at the state’s actions, the ACLU of Rhode Island today called on state officials to stop conducting criminal background checks on all of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees who have relocated to Rhode Island this week. The ACLU called the checks “intrusive, humiliating and discriminatory.”Source
The ACLU, as always are clueless. I say, lets put these sex offenders in the ACLU member’s houses.

If the idiots are so concerned about the criminals checks, why dont they open their homes to the evacuees with out the checks, then if they commit a crime if won’t make much difference
