WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13-5 on Thursday to confirm John Roberts to be the chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. The full Senate will vote on the nomination on Monday.

Roberts won the support of all 10 Republicans on the committee and three Democrats — Ranking Minority Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, both of Wisconsin.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter , R-Pa., called Leahy “my courageous colleague” for supporting Roberts, saying the nominee has the ability to end the Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 splits on issues important to Americans.

Now, time to prepare for O’Connor’s replacement! That’s when its gonna get ugly.

I’d like to second an email I got from our good friend Gribbit.

Today I’ve been re-reading into details of Senator Kennedy’s little brush with the law in 1969. And it seems to me for someone who so successfully avoided facing the truth of being guilty of the murder of another human being to insist on Judge Roberts being more “forthcoming” in his answers to their questions seems a bit hypocritical. How this un-convicted criminal ended up on the Judiciary Committee is a major question. How can we as citizens of a nation of laws have someone who is responsible for the death of another person in a position to decide who serves on the federal bench is an embarrassment. But I digress.

The nomination is expected to come to a full vote of the Senate on Monday.

For those of you unfamiliar with the DETAILS of the incident that Senator (and I use the term loosely) Kennedy was involved in, take a look at this site:
