The John Roberts Show
With each barb lobbed by Senators Ted Kennedy, Joe Biden, Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer; Judge Roberts further illustrates why I, along with others, are beginning to see President Bush plucked the right man to replace Chief Justice Rehnquist.

if judges allow their personal views to direct how they intepret the law, then they're not doing their job. yes it is true that we, as everyday people, allow our views to direct how we interpret things, but that is why we have a written law we all have to follow by. written law has to be rigid or else our liberties and rights will be left up to the whims of conservative or liberal justices who allow their personal views to direct the way they interpret the law. in this instance, the same law might be differently applied by judges with differing personal views...isn't that a problem?

cl, you are partially correct. it shouldn't matter if a liberal or conservative gets nominated. all that should be discussed is their ability to be a judge. and is this happening during these confirmation hearings? absolutely not!

as scalia once said. if the lawrence decision is overturned and the issue of privacy to somdomy gets returned to the states, texas might very well overwhelmingly ban sodomy through the state legislature. scalia himself said that he disagrees with this possible outcome, but he can't do anything about it b/c it's out of his jurisdiction. an example of him separating his personal views from his judicial duties.

CL, you speak of moderates...this is what John Roberts is, and why he is saying he will not put his personal views into this. Watch, he will get the votes needed, even from the dems...the moderate dems who know he is qualified, and the best out there for the job.

If your personal views don't matter then what difference does it make if we place a conservative, moderate, or liberal on the bench? Of course it matters because our personal views direct how we interpret things (the law in this case.) If a liberal was nominated, wouldn’t you also question the same way? Of course. Hypocrites! Place a moderate on the bench!
