Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist Dead

Hat Tip Jawa Report viaFox News
Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.
A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.
“The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days,” she said.
Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.
His death ends a remarkable 33-year Supreme Court career during which Rehnquist oversaw the court’s conservative shift, presided over an impeachment trial and helped decide a presidential election.
The death President Bush his second court opening within four months and sets up what’s expected to be an even more bruising Senate confirmation battle than that of John Roberts.
What more can I say besides…May he rest in peace, and it’s fixin to get ugly? Will the democrats pull out all all the punches and dig in their heels about Roberts, or will their attention start to focus on the new opening and confirm Roberts? And now the million dollar question is who will Bush nominate to replace the top spot on the Supreme Court. The democrats will really be fretting soon, and we will see a lot more looniness come about from them. The Court is the only power they have left, and they will do ANYTHING to keep it, or gain more footing there.
The utmost respect for not retiring. He stuck it out till the end and did a superb job setting an example of what a Supreme Court Judge should be. I think it’s time Justice Thomas gets a promotion.
Michelle Malkin has a good round up on it. I’m sure we will have lots more to say on this in the coming days.

Suddenly, news organizations and left-wing lobbiest groups across the country are photocopying everything they’ve printed about Roberts, removing his name and waiting for President Bush to announce whose name will be inserted into their canned rhetoric.
Oh, did I just say that out loud?
God rest his soul and condolences to his family.
I hope he will appoint Scalia or Thomas as Chief Justice (hopefully Scalia) and nominate Janice Rogers Brown.
Who knows…he did surprise most people with Robert’s nomination.
Chief Justice Rehnquist will be missed and hard to replace. May He Rest In Peace. It will be interesting to see who is nominated to take his place.
God Bless America, God Save The Republic.
Such a sad loss. My worry is regaring the SCOTUS and timing? with two vacant seats, will the court open in October as scheduled? I assume so,… but then, who picks the order of the cases they hear: Chief Justice? So that might be a shorter-term urgency for Bush to attend to. Scalia is a pretty obvious choice, Thomas is still more junior… but I guess they don’t care about seniority?
That said: Can they push off the ?real big cases? for later, when the court is filled (much to the dismay of the Dems)? This could be a considerable concern, if the Democrats stonewall the ?advise and consent? process.
First the blame came in the wake of Katrina, and now poor Rehnquist. Not looking real good for warm and happy fall session of Congress, if it ever was.
The man showed true dedication to his calling, and must be admired as such. Much like Pope John Paul II, whose passing I mourned earlier this year, Chief Justice Rehnquist refused to let illness distract him from his duty to his people.
I loved Chief Justice Rehnquist because of his dissening view/vote/comments on Roe v. Wade. He was a GREAT judge.
Is it too early to throw Robert Bork’s name into the mix?
