NY Implements Politically Correct Searches
Posted on July 24, 2005
Update: I told you so. On one hand the ACLU is against random searches, and on the other they are against profiling searches. What do they suggest to help us be safer. I don’t think I want to know.
“We believe it opens up the door to profiling and potential discrimination,” said Roger Vann, executive director of the ACLU of Connecticut. “We’re launching an investigation into the situation in Connecticut similar to what our affiliates have done in New York and New Jersey. Whether or not that will result in a lawsuit will depend on what we find.”
The ACLU will send monitors out later this week to a few train stations to interview commuters, Vann said. They are also taking complaints by e-mail. The address is: complaintsacluct.org.Source
Hat tip to Right On!
New York City isn’t standing still in the wake of the two recent bombings on London’s Underground. The NYPD introduced a new policy of random searches of bags and packages on New York’s subway, buses and commuter rail lines.Source
The New York chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union immediately voiced its objection to the new policy.
“The police can and should be aggressively investigating anyone they suspect is trying to bring explosives into the subway,” said Christopher Dunn, associate legal director at the New York Civil Liberties Union. “However, random police searches of people without any suspicion of wrongdoing are contrary to our most basic constitutional values. This is a very troubling announcement.”
Hmmmm…I’m gonna have to agree with this statement. Is the ACLU saying the searches should involve a little profiling? Surely not! While I applaud any efforts to fight terrorism done by New York officials, it seems to me that political correctness trumps in this case.
“No racial profiling will be allowed,” announced Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. “It’s against our policies.”
Moonbattery points out…that when Boston tried to implement random searches….
The ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee objected to the point of going to court over it. Passengers were selected based on random numbers using clicker-counts of riders, so that no one could accuse authorities of picking on likely terrorists.
So, what this says to me is that the ACLU opposes random searches, and logical searches. As a matter of fact, as I’ve pointed out repeately here, the ACLU seems to oppose any measure the government takes to protect us. Not only this, but they also are quick to the defense of the very enemy. They had rather have the enemies of liberty defended than the Country itself.
Eventually we are going to have to chose between the bizarre anti-religion known as political correctness and simple survival. I wish I had more faith that we will choose wisely.
Well said! It seems that others around the blogosphere agree there are flaws in this politically correct overreaction.
Outside The Beltway notes…
For one thing, it makes zero sense to allow people subjected to random searches to leave. That has no deterrent value whatsoever. A terrorist group can plot an attack and figure they have an excellent chance of making it through without a check. On the off chance they are selected, they decline and leave to come back in an hour or the next day. What a joke.
Practically speaking, this means that if I-a blonde woman who totes a couple of bags-am sitting on one side of you on the subway and a Muslim-looking man with a backpack is sitting on your other side, the cop will make it a point to search only me.
Right On! states…
Heck I got on a plane one week after 9/11 and they skipped the guy in front of me (muslim, beard to his knees, turban, wrapped in thick clothing) and nailed me, Mr. Average Joe White Guy for an emergency inspection. I asked the clerk why they skipped him and she told me “We don’t want to get sued for racial profiling.” The ACLU is going to politically correct this country out of existence.
Its been said before. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but as of late, the majority of terrorists have been Muslims. In this day and age, a little racial profiling makes sense, for the security of our nation.
Oubai Mohammad Shahbandar made a lot of sense in an article he wrote back in 2003 that I will let sum things up.
If I, an Arab immigrant, can come to terms with the fact that a limited use of racial profiling is necessary for the security of this country, then surely there is room in the national dialogue for those who stand up for our government’s right to effectively protect its citizens.
The ACLU and ADC’s rejection of any sort of middle-ground on the issue points to their partisan, leftist agenda, which they apparently place above the national security of this nation. Ironically, were it not for these very officers, protecting the pampered leftist activists from the hostile forces of extreme Islam, the activists would not have the freedom to attack their own government.
Without life, there can be no liberty and pursuit of happiness. I pray the government will continue to take all steps necessary to safeguard us all. Mr. President, profile the terrorists.Read The Whole Thing
Political Correctness could very well end up being the death of this Country.

The ACLU is gonna get America blown up if it’s the last thing they do. Commies! Let’s start profiling…Let’s save some lives. It’s for Arabs safety too!
Nice Post Jay!
It’s called common sense. Who’s more likely to have a bomb? Grandma or Muhammed?
I am all for profiling – just call me politically incorrect.
Maybe the ACLU plays up to all the terrorist organizations because they are really terrified to be the target themselves of terrorism. Politically correct pansies.
Its been said before. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but as of late, all the terrorists have been Muslims.
Amen, brother. Truer words have not been spoken.
I’m gonna agree with Tim.
If we were fighting the IRA I’d expect to be stopped…hell, do whatever it takes and let the whiners be damned.
Ol Tim and Ted….guess i need to edit this post to be a little more “politically correct” just for you guys.
there you go guys…all fixed.
So I guess Timothy McVeigh ought to tell us about the 8 Iraqis who ran back to Iraq after the OK City Bombing. You remember, Tim, the guys who were coaching you and Terry Nichols (and who arranged Terry’s marriage–it’s not Terry’s signature on the marriage certificate)-to make it more understandable for him to go to Cebu for his bomb-making classes with Mohammed Atta. You know, those guys with the tatoos that indicated they were part of Saddam’s Mukharabat.
If those guys had been nabbed to start with the rest of it wouldn’t have happened.
But Clinton was interested in nailing conservative white boys and making it difficult to do racial profiling.
He was busy cozying up with Arafat and it would have made those talks a little more “strained”, if you will.
Cao…You are right on the money with that. I’ve bloged about that before, but each time I’ve put it up..No one said anything about it.
Jay awesome post man…You don’t see people with names like “Jason Smith or Mary Ring” blowing people up, in the name of some goofy Comic Book Death Cult.
Profile them all. And as Big Bob said, if they were profiling Mafia guys..I’d be the first one in line to be searched.

I am all for profiling. Grandma with her big purse is not a threat. Abdul wearing a duster style jacket when it is 80 degrees out is.
I have a couple of posts over at Common Sense Runs Wild (http://commonsenserunswild.com) about this issue while guest blogging for Janette.
Keep in mind — this fits with the ACLU’s goals! They want to detroy America. What better way than to allow more attacks? It sounds bad, but that’s how the ACLU works. If they can make America a worse place, you can be sure they’ll blame government, and they’ll be ready with communism to step right in.
I read somewhere that searches based on police officers’ suspicions were ruled as being profiling, and hence unconstitutional. I would rather risk violating one individual’s rights based on a police officer’s judgement than rely on the ridiculous current policy of random searches. That goes double for the Liberal judges in NY, like the one who ruled that criminals had the “right” to run away from the police, when caught with several kilos of cocaine. Whatever policy is implemented, we have a huge problem with the judicial system in this city, the most vulnerable high value target for the terrorists.
Wow! hadn’t heard that one. You have the right to run an attorney, you have the right to remain silent, you have the right to run from the cops…LOL! I take it the cop’s didn’t have the right to beat the runner silly with their billy club when they caught em huh?
Random searches are still a deterrent, though I called them ridiculous in my last comment. Just wanted to clarify that. It’s better than nothing, which is what they’re doing in D.C.
Luckily, the absurd ruling by the NYC federal judge was ultimately overturned on appeal. This case just shows how pervasive the influence of groups like the ACLU is in this region of the country. I’m just getting started on this group, and what they actually stand for vs. what they claim to stand for. Keep up the good work, and I’ll keep doing the same.
Welcome to the new home of the Brownshirts. I hate to be anonymous, but I don’t trust you guys not to turn into a bunch of raging vigilantes who go after anybody who questions their point of view. Which, by the way, is why we have the ACLU.
Relax, I have your I.P. address if I really felt like hunting you down.

Jay – that’s a trap if ever I heard it. The ACLU saying that random searches are not right but allude to profiling? Just try it, someone. The minute you do, the ACLU will be suing on the other end, in defense of the person who was profiled. ACLU = damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Great post, Jay.
Thanks for your hard work.
It seems to me that we have put up with restrictions on our travel when it comes to flying and no one has said anything too bad about it. It only makes sense that steps be taken that would ensure the masses and if a few toes get stepped on so be it.
Like BobG said earlier, if the IRA was bombing here in the states, I’d expect to be looked at. I’m a fair complected, blue eyed, white male of Irish decent.
I believe that the good God fearing people of the Islamic faith in this country understand our plight. And they are just as anxious as the rest of us are.
A little inconvenience for the sake of security in these times is not too much to ask for.
But that is just my opinion.
That’s it… Put your rights on the floor and walk away slowly…
Just a little inconvenience here and there… nothing to worry about…
Here, watch some WWF and “According to Jim” while we properly invest your Social Security dollars…
History will hate you all for your ignorant complacence.
Your blog is very interesint
